Students will watch a video about the story of an immigrant family and consider what parents give up for their children as they explore what it means to sacrifice something.

Students will watch a video about the story of an immigrant family and consider what parents give up for their children as they explore what it means to sacrifice something.

The big holiday season is over now and we are starting fresh in a new year. Holidays can be filled with joy, and with an excess of sweets and gifts and expenses. Do you think your parents made any sacrifices this year so you could enjoy a big Christmas? Did your family have to sacrifice a big Christmas to be more comfortable during the rest of the year?

Parents often have to make tough choices and make certain sacrifices for their families. In the video we’re about to watch, the daughter of immigrant parents shows appreciation for the many sacrifices her parents made for her.

What sacrifices might these parents have made for their daughter? (Accept all reasonable responses, which may include the following: immigrating to give their daughter a better life, working to provide for her, giving up things for themselves so their daughter would be cared for, contributing financially to her education, etc.)
What sacrifices have your parents (or anyone) made to better your life? (Accept all reasonable answers. Parents give up lots of their time, energy, sleep, money, and simply their personal preferences for the benefit of their children. They have to make choices about work and every aspect of life to do the best they can for their family.)
Have you ever had to make a sacrifice to help someone or achieve a goal? Tell about that. (Accept all reasonable answers. Help students think this through. Maybe students have gone without in a small way in order to give something to someone who goes without often. Maybe in a team setting, students have had to give long hours to practice or play a supporting role while others star. Maybe students have sacrificed social status to stick with a true friend or stick to their values.)
Is there anything you’d never be willing to sacrifice or give up? (Answers will vary. Accept all reasonable answers.)

Parents demonstrate what it means to make sacrifices for the sake of someone they love. However, the greatest example of this comes from Jesus, who gave His body and His life as a sacrifice, that we might be made holy.

If your class is meeting online, invite students to bring supplies with them to class.

Today we’ve seen that Jesus’ sacrifice makes us holy and right with God. That means we have salvation from sin and life forever with God. He did this because we could not earn it or get it for ourselves. We don’t have to do anything to get it; we just receive it and respond to it.

Do you think people today try to earn their salvation by doing something rather than accepting that Jesus has done it? If so, what do they do? (Accept all reasonable answers. There is a common conception that “good” people go to heaven and that our choices on earth effect our destination after. Some people may live this belief out in various ways.)
What difference does it make for your life that Jesus has given you salvation? Does it change anything for you? (Accept all reasonable answers. For some who have grown up with this understanding, the value of Jesus’ sacrifice may be underappreciated. However, teens may express their appreciation for the assurance about eternal life, total forgiveness and unconditional love. These are huge gifts that we can see the need for daily and can’t find elsewhere.)
How can we respond to what Jesus has done? (Accept all reasonable answers. As with any gift, thankfulness is an appropriate response. We can praise and worship the One who saves us. We can express our thanks and praise with our lives, as all we do and say can be done in honor of Jesus. Students may try to “pass it on” by telling others about Jesus or simply living generously, selflessly, and graciously. Students may also try to live their lives with gratitude and in accordance with Jesus’ example as a response.)

We can respond to Jesus with thanks and praise. We can show our thanks and praise through words, art, and action. Listen to the following song, by worship duo Fox and Foal, which sings thanks and praise to Jesus for His sacrifice and consider your own response. You can think, pray, write, or draw while the song plays, and consider how to express your praise and thankfulness now and this week.

Distribute supplies to anyone who wants them (or invite students to have supplies ready at home). Encourage students who want to talk more about Jesus’ offer of salvation to meet with you after class. Help in sharing the Gospel with this age group is found in your teacher’s guide.)
