As a way to introduce today’s lesson to your students, invite students to respond to this question.
- Have you ever been hurt, excluded, or judged by others for something you believe? What was that experience like? (Answers will vary.)
After students have shared their experiences, share the following story with them:
Around the world, Christians are persecuted for their faith. Just a few weeks ago on Christmas Eve, the terrorist group Boko Haram attacked a Christian village in Nigeria. They killed members of the church, burned homes and a church, and stole essentials supplies from the villagers. This terrorist organization has attacked and persecuted Christians for decades, but the Nigerian church continues to stand firm in God.

- Does it surprise you to learn that Christians are being persecuted for their faith around the world? (Answers will vary.)
- Statistics show that one in twelve Christian believers cannot live out their faith without harassment, intimidation, or fear. Have you ever been treated differently for your faith? Have you seen other Christians experience this? (Answers will vary.)
- The video briefly touched on different sources of difficulty for Christian minorities. Can you remember some of them? (Government, community pressure, and even within their own families.)
- Why do you think most American Christians take their freedoms for granted? (We are pretty insulated from the rest of the world, we are so accustomed to practicing our faith openly without fear, we don’t necessarily live out our faith publicly, etc.)
We are going to be learning more about what some of the early Christians experienced from the Book of Acts. The apostle Paul knew what it was like to face persecution, and his example is a good lesson for us even today.
