Students will watch a video about a man showing kindness to someone in need as they consider helping others through God’s power.

Materials Needed:

Think of a time when you helped someone. What happened? (Answers will vary. Students may talk about helping a friend, family member, someone at school, or a neighbor.)
Can you think of a time when someone helped you? Tell us about it. (Answers will vary.)

Many people in our world need help. This has especially been true during the past three years with the pandemic, natural disasters, and economic uncertainty in our country.

Some people need physical things such as food, clothes, or medicine. Others need emotional and spiritual help such as encouragement, kindness, and comfort. If we look around at our neighbors and the people we know, it’s easy to see people who need help.

Let’s watch a video about a man who helped someone recently.

Social media personality Jimmy Darts freely offered help to the man in the video. What difference does it make to be offered something without cost or expectation? (Accept all reasonable answers. This means there are no hoops to jump through to qualify and no burden of repayment. It means you can have what you need regardless of your circumstances. It is a gift. It is gracious.)
What impact will the provisions have on the man in the video? (Accept all reasonable answers, which may include that the donations will help him secure housing.)
How do you think the man felt after receiving this money? (Answers may include blessed, relieved from financial strain, thankful, etc.)
Why is it important to help people we know are struggling? (Answers will vary)
Do you think Jimmy would have been able to carry out this act of kindness without the help of this followers? (No. Their donations and support made this act of kindness possible.)

While most of us can’t help someone by giving a large sum of money, when we look at our friends, family members, and community, we can keep our eyes open for ways we can help. We have Someone with us at all times that helps us help others. Let’s discover what Jesus taught us about the Holy Spirit.

If your class is meeting online, invite students to bring supplies with them to class.

Peter and John helped people as God showed them the needs. The Holy Spirit helps us help others, too. Ask a volunteer to read today’s memory verse (John 14:26).

What are some ways the Holy Spirit helps us to help others? (Answers will vary. Students may say the Holy Spirit reminds us of the things Jesus told us to do such as be kind, forgive, and love others. The Holy Spirit teaches us how to do things and gives us ideas.)
Who are some people you know who need help? (Students may mention family members, neighbors, elderly friends, people from school or church.)

What are some of the ways the song said the Holy Spirit works in us? (Answers will vary. Students may mention the Holy Spirit brings Jesus’ presence, renews my heart and makes me whole, makes God’s Word alive, gives me faith, gives me passion for purity, gives me joy, helps me not sin, helps me to love, helps me show kindness and gentleness, helps me pursue peace, helps me do works of grace, helps to show Christ in all I do.)

Distribute supplies (or invite students to have them ready at home). The Holy Spirit helps you do many things. He is like the fuel that gives you power to help others. Sometimes the Spirit may even give you a specific idea of how to help someone. For example, you may feel like you should write someone a note of encouragement or share something you have.

Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” God can use your specific talents and abilities to help other people.

Think about the people you know who need help. They may have a physical need, such as needing groceries or help with a project, or they may need emotional help such as a need for encouragement or kindness.

Have students fold their papers in half and in half again, creating four quadrants. Have them write one of the following titles in each of the four quadrants: “Family member,” “Neighbor,” “Friend,” and “Someone I’ve never met.”

Write one idea for helping each person listed. For example, in the “Family member” quadrant you could write, “I can help Mom with a household project.” Under “Someone I’ve never met,” you could write, “I can pray for a missionary.” Remember, the Holy Spirit gives you the power to help others.

You may ask a few volunteers to share one of their ideas if they would like to. Let’s pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help us to help others this week.
