Miracle in Toronto

Materials Needed:

  • Internet access

In February, a plane full of passengers was left Minneapolis, Minnesota—and crash-landed in Toronto, Canada.

Read the following paragraphs from the BBC News report to your students:

According to a report from BBC News, “All 80 people on board a plane which crashed and overturned while landing in Toronto have survived, officials said.

The Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis skidded along the runway with flames visible and it came to a halt upside down as firefighters came to the rescue.

Survivors said they were suspended upside down in their seats and had to release themselves, dropping on to the ceiling before clambering out on to the snow-covered tarmac.”

When you hear about a plane crash on the news, you often find out that some of the people aboard—more frequently all of them—died. But in this case, all 80 people on board survived!

  • If you heard about a plane crash landing with 80 people on board, how would you expect the story to end? (Some of your students may say they would hope for a happy ending. However, many of them will probably acknowledge that they would expect a tragic conclusion.)

Thankfully, this story ended in a miracle rather than a tragedy. We may not be facing a plane crash today, but there are always things that seem out of our control.

  • What kind of things that you face make you feel out of control? (Answers will vary; be sure you’re prepared to share your own experience if needed to get the conversation going.)
  • How do you handle experiences that are out of your control? How do you respond? (Answers will vary.)

Today, we’re going to talk about a really bad situation completely out of Joseph’s control and how God used that to bring about a miracle.
