In many countries around the world, Christians are persecuted for their faith. Each day that Christians in some of countries choose to live for Jesus puts them at risk of oppression, violence, and even death.

  • How might you respond if you faced similar danger for your faith? Do you think you would live life to the fullest, or would you choose to focus on being afraid or angry at the people persecuting you? (Give your students a chance to respond to this question.)
  • How do you think persecuted Christians’ faith in God might shape their lives and actions? (Give your students a chance to respond to this question.)

While it would be easy for Christians in many countries to abandon their faith—or live in anger or fear—persecuted Christians battle oppression to live out their faith in God. An organization called the World Watch List publishes annual statistics on Christian persecution around the world. Let’s check out some of the most persecuted countries from 2024.

  • Are you surprised by these Christians’ willingness to serve God in spite of the oppression they face? Why or why not? (Answers will vary.)

Although these Christians could choose lives of fear, bitterness, or rejected faith, they instead choose whole-hearted devotion to God. Keeping our eyes up, pressing on toward the prize, giving ourselves fully to the work at hand despite obstacles—these are incredibly challenging tasks, but they are exactly what God wants for each one of His children.

In this week’s lesson, we’ll look at someone who kept his focus on God rather than the opposition at hand. Let’s take a look.
