OBEY THE LLAMA LAW OF GEORGIA
Did you know that the state of Georgia has a law protecting llama owners from being sued, even if their llama kills someone? The Georgia Department of Agriculture considers it general knowledge that llamas are known to be “inherently dangerous.” Therefore, if you get too close to a llama and suffer injury (or get spat upon), that’s on you. The law wants to be sure you know that this personal liability pertains to “all llama-related activities.” Now, if someone brings a llama to an event but does not make “reasonable and prudent” efforts to ensure public safety, then that person can be sued. Otherwise, Georgian llamas and their owners are untouchable.
OBEY THE AUTHORITY OF THE EMPIRE
Today’s readings concern the Christian’s stance with regard to governmental authority. When Jesus is presented with a choice to side with the Roman empire about paying taxes or with those who refuse, He differentiates God’s authority from authority belonging to human leaders. Paul says that being subject to the government is for our good. Peter instructs Christians to submit to civic authority—which is instituted by God. Freedom as God’s beloved people is to be used for the good of others and to enhance the reputation of Christ.
