Once students have arrived to class, invite them to participate in a discussion.
Over the last few years, you may have heard about the war happening in Sudan, a country in the continent of Africa. Since April 2023, Sudan has been in the midst of a civil war. In the process, innocent people have died, buildings and properties have been destroyed, citizens’ access to basic resources has been limited, and over 14 million people have been displaced from their homes.
When such crises as this war occur, it can be easy to focus on the horrible events and headlines rather than thinking about ways to help those in need. Thankfully, both aid organizations and individuals have been taking action to help people displaced by the war.
- Have you heard about people or organizations helping Sudanese refugees? If so, what are they doing to help? (Accept all reasonable responses.)
Let’s watch a short video about what one organization, Women for Peace and Development Association, in Uganda is doing to love and serve Sudanese refugees. This organization exists to “create a positive impact by helping women build useful skills, overcome daily challenges, and become self-reliant.” Let’s take a look.
Invite students to watch the following video [1:37]: Aida’s Work: Life and Resilience of Sudanese Refugees in Uganda
Volunteers for the Women for Peace and Development Association share their time, support, and skills with Sudanese refugees so they can build a new life in Uganda.
- When is it easy to share with others? (Allow students time to explore this; they might say when you have a lot or know you will get more, when you care about the person you are sharing with, if that person will share something they have with you as a trade, etc.)
- When is it hard to share with others? (Students may be able to look at opposites of their answers in the previous question; examples might include: when you have to sacrifice time, money, comfort, or privacy; when you don’t like the person you have to share with; when it means giving up something that you want for yourself, etc.)
- Tell about a time when you’ve been asked to share something and that request didn’t seem fair to you. (Be prepared to share your own experience.)
In today’s lesson, some men were asked to share what they thought they deserved with others who didn’t deserve it. Let’s see what happened.
