- Have any of you had a chance to look at cells, germs, or a drop of water under a microscope? What did you see? (Give preteens an opportunity to share if anyone has had this experience.)
It’s easy to look at the world around us and think that’s all there is to see, but in reality, there are all sorts of things going on. Take, for example, bacteria that can cause infections or illnesses, such as bronchitis. Although we cannot see bacteria, it infects many people worldwide. Let’s take a look at bacteria—and antibiotics that can fight it—up close:
Share the following video clip with your students [0:57]: Something weird happens when you add ANTIBIOTICS to BACTERIA under the microscope!
- What stood out to you about the bacteria? (Students may comment on the shape or motion of the bacteria.)
- We cannot see bacteria—or the way antibiotics fight it—without a microscope. What are some other things that we know are there but we can’t see? (Students may mention electricity—even though we see it in the form of lightning, it normally flows through wires without being seen; air—we see the effects of air and wind but not air itself; microwaves that make wi-fi work; magnetic waves that make a compass point north; gravitational waves that cause high and low tide, etc.)
God created an amazing world where a lot of things take place that we have to accept without being able to see visible evidence. Today we’re going to talk about something else we can’t see but means more to us than anything else—let’s see what the Bible has to say.
